The RCH offers a variety of cooking classes to members of the community. Classes focus on understanding and preparing healthy, nutritional meals – and sampling the finished products! During summer and fall months, classes utilize fresh produce harvested in the RCH gardens.
Food, Fun, and Friendship
Gathering Wednesday mornings, this is a weekly drop-in class for neighbors. Each week participants prepare a new dish – everything from sweet to savory.
Slow Cooker Cooking Class
Developed in collaboration with Nurture, four-session cooking classes featuring delicious, economical meals prepared in a slow cooker are offered throughout the year. Recipes are available in both English and Spanish and classes support a healthy life style by stressing the importance of good nutrition and exercise. At the program’s conclusion, each family receives their own slow cooker.
Grilling is a healthy and nutritious way to prepare foods. Grilling seals in moisture, keeps foods tender, and helps to retain their nutritional content. Grilling classes show participants how to prepare a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables, on the grill. We also include nutritional and delicious recipes for desserts that can be grilled!
Students will prepare a different food item (or recipe) each week that they will have for lunch that day. Topics and activities will reinforce healthy food choices, food preparation techniques, cooking, baking, safe knife handling, table manners, kitchen clean up, etc.
Summer Lunches & Garden “Tastings”
Summer Lunch Program
As part of our Monday summer lunches, this class prepares lunch for twenty-five to thirty students and staff at the nearby Lake County Windy City Green Youth Farm. Lunches highlight a different fresh vegetable harvested each week.
Tuesdays during summer months the RCH prepares food “tastings” for neighbors so that they can sample and learn various ways to prepare the fruits and vegetables harvested in the community garden.
