Cooking Classes
Food, Fun, and Friendship
Gathering Wednesday mornings, this weekly drop-in class began as an opportunity for neighbors to build connections. As relationships and confidence strengthened, the focus of this group turned, naturally, to food. Sharing recipes, culture and nutrition advice, local participants and volunteers all learn something new each week.
Slow Cooker Cooking Class
This four-session class features delicious, economical meals prepared in a slow cooker. Recipes are available in both English and Spanish and classes support a healthy life style by stressing the importance of good nutrition and exercise. At the program’s conclusion, each family receives their own slow cooker.
Master Chefs & Junior Chefs
Offering two levels for different age groups, these youth cooking classes are offered throughout the summer and during school breaks. Students prepare different recipes each week and enjoy the fruits (and vegetables and pizza) of their labors in a meal with their peers. Topics and activities reinforce healthy food choices, preparation techniques, cooking, baking, safe knife handling, table manners, kitchen clean up, and team camaraderie.
Summer Lunches & Garden “Tastings”
Summer Lunch Program
Everyone at RCH its encouraged to give back to the community. Our Monday summer lunch program prepares lunch for twenty-five to thirty students and staff at the nearby Lake County Windy City Green Youth Farm. Lunches highlight a different fresh vegetable harvested each week.
Community Garden
Tuesdays during summer months RCH prepares food “tastings” for neighbors so that they can sample and learn various ways to prepare the fruits and vegetables harvested in the community garden.
